What the Om symbolizes?
The word Om (pronounced as ohm) derives
from the ancient northern Indian language Sanskrit. It symbolizes
expansion. The symbol representing Om like the pendant is called
the omkar, and has four parts, representing the four states of
supreme being awareness: the waking, dream and deep sleep states
and "Turiya" state (the state of perfect bliss when the individual
self recognizes his identity with the supreme).
Om represents Brahman, both the unmanifest
(nirguna) and manifest (saguna) aspects of God. It enables the
manifestation of unknowable. Om is an intonation by itself rather
than a word. It is a musical sound that contains all other sounds
that penetrate through ones body. The intonation is a holy mantra
or prayer by itself which carries peace, harmony and bliss.
Om enables the mind to be purified and cleansed so that there
is potential to see what is beyond. One would gain from universal
thinking when they practise uttering Om multiple times everyday.
Om can be written in different forms such as Tibetan form. But the oldest version of all is the sanskrit form as in this pendant.
